To accompany the Bible Bureau's pages on the Bible, where you can either read, download or buy the Bible, a description of each version may be necessary, so that you may find it easier to choose which you will select. Beside, you may also like to have more information on those you have already selected. Here's an introduction:

American Standard Version

  Back

The American Standard Version of 1901 (ASV), occasionally called the American Revised Version, and officially called the Revised Version, Standard American Edition (ARV), is an Americanisation of the English Revised Version, which is an update of the KJV of 1611.The ASV was the basis of two revisions. They were the Revised Standard Version (1952) and the New American Standard Bible (1971), and is the basis for the World English Bible.

Over 50 interdenominational translators started the task in 1872 and completed it in 1881-1885, using the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) and the Westcott & Hort (WH) texts, to produce what was once called 'The Rock of Biblical Honesty'.

The text is a bit old, and not always easy to read, still using ye, thee, thou and thine, but replacing 'Holy Ghost' with 'Holy Spirit' and using 'Jehovah' instead of 'LORD', without capitalising pronouns referring to God. Still a very good standard for any serious Bible student.

The Common Edition: New Testament

Back

The Common Edition (TCE) is the result of a decade long study of the New Testament and numerous English translations in the modern church and seems to derive its name by the act of isolating what the most widely used editions have in common, by eliminating what they do not have in common, and by placing the results in a single text.

The goals for this edition are:
1) To be accurate to the Greek Scriptures and yet highly readable.
2) To balance traditional wording with modern English.
3) To reflect the standard Christian understanding and wording of the New Testament.
The purpose of these goals is to create a standardised New Testament for the modern English reader

Although this is the work of 1 man, Timothy E. Clontz, he wishes to give his gratitude to the many people who have laboured to preserve The New Testament text. Those who penned the autographs often faced ridicule or death. Nameless monks sleeping in the dust, who faithfully copied one manuscript to another down through the centuries, and those who have simply loved these words enough to live by their highest ideals, even to death.

Without wanting to be innovative, but rather to be a standard edition, the Common Edition strives to strike a balance between a literal, traditional and modern text.

The 2001 Translation - An American English Bible

Back

The purpose of this translation is to create a Bible that is easy to read in contemporary American English that conveys the original messages and meanings as accurately as possible. The translators didn't follow established convention by employing traditional (and often misleading) old English words.

The editors, contributors, and translators of this Bible come from various religious backgrounds. This Bible is not approved by or authorized by any religious group. Since they were trying to go beyond accepted doctrines and get back to what was actually said, looking beyond what the words may mean, they have attempted to avoid the use of words that are already given special meanings by religions.
